Registration To Open Soon

Regional Caravan Captains met at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY on April 28. At that meeting, Caravan National Chair, Kathie Lin Summers, announced that the NCM was in the final stages of setting-up the system by which Caravanners will register for the event. "Admiral" Summers suggested that Caravan Registration will begin in the next 30 days.

Both the National Caravan web site at http://www.corvettecaravan.com/ and this eNews will post announcements when registration begins.

The Route Begins to Gel

Southern California Regional Caravan Captain, Hib Halverson, tells the SoCalCar eNews that a 5-day schedule now has the inside track, though the final decision as to the route still hasn't been made. "I had meetings with both Bob Kroener of the Arizona/New Mexico Caravan and "Tuna" Dobbins of the North Texas/Oklahoma Caravan," Halverson said. "Unfortunately, Capt. Kroener's group is not going join the SoCalCar, the NTX/OK and Arkansas Caravans on the trip to Bowling Green. The AZ/NM group will use some of the same route as the SoCalCar but will arrive in Bowling Green sometime Thursday morning rather than Wednesday night."

Capt. Halverson went on to say that there are road tour events along with Bowling Green Assembly Plant tours available all day on Thursday as part of the NCM's 15th Anniversary weekend. As one of the main reasons people go on the National Corvette Caravan is that it ends in Bowling Green where they can get a tour of the Corvette Plant. "Plant tours on the weekends of big NCM events," Halverson said, "fill-up quick-real quick. In fact, on the '03 we had people who couldn't get on Plant tours because they waited too late to sign-up. The SoCalCar needs to get to B.G. on Wednesday to leave all day Thursday available to our Caravanners who want to go on the many road tours the NCM organizes or go through Bowling Green Assembly and the SoCalCar Organizing Team is going to make sure that happens."

"In my meeting with Tuna Dobbins, Captain of the TX/OK Caravan," Halverson continued, "I believe the route he and Capt, Jan Marshall of the Arkansas Caravan may take through eastern Oklahoma and Arkansas will be different than the route taken in '03 with the Caravan exploring parts of old US66 in OK."

In talking with sources on the SoCalCar O.T. the eNews feels that right now, the tentative schedule and route for the SoCalCar could be:

Fri. 8/28/09: Feeder Caravans from San Diego and Santa Barbara > Fontana CA
Sat. 8/29/09: Fontana CA > Flagstaff AZ and will include Historic 66 from Kingman to Flagstaff AZ but not H66 in eastern CA
Sun. 8/30/09: Flagstaff > Tucumcari NM and may include parts of old US66 east of Albuquerque
Mon. 8/31/09: Tucumcari > Oklahoma City OK
Tue. 9/1/09: Oklahoma City > tba and may include parts of old US 66
Wed. 9/2/09: tba > Bowling Green KY

The Quest for Sponsors

To put on an five-day event for 500 people costs quite a bit of money. The Regional Caravans all raise money. Some raise a little. Others raise a lot. Some Regional Caravans sell merchandise to raise money, others choose to acquire sponsors who donate the money. All Regional Caravans donate any money left over after the event to the National Corvette Museum.

The Southern California Caravan Organizing Team's "Sponsorship Committee" of Brent Hicks and Hib Halverson, are starting to line-up corporate sponsors for the '09 event. "Obviously, we are first going to call-on the major sponsors of the '03 SoCalCar," Halverson said. "In fact, I'm flying to Florida next week to meet with executives of a major Corvette-related company which was a key sponsor in '03. No, I can't tell what company it is right now, but if you have the '03 route book, you can look though it and see that there were a handful of major sponsors and it one of those companies. Hopefully, I'll have more to tell you, soon."

Best regards,
The Southern California/Southern Nevada Caravan Organizing Team
