Updated 8/30/09 Georgia & Eastern TennesseeThe handbook for Georgia & Eastern Tennessee participants is now available: My name is Joe Owens and my wife is Cindy; we were the Videographers for Georgia and the 50th Anniversary Caravan. Our first experience was the 1999 Corvette Caravan, then again with the 50th Anniversary Caravan in 2003. We are so excited with the upcoming 15th Anniversary Caravan that we just had to be more than just a participant. The festivities are scheduled to take place at the NCM September 3-5, 2009 in Bowling Green, KY. We currently own 2 Corvettes, both convertibles; a 1971 and a 2000. We made the 1999 Caravan trip in a 1988 Coupe. We are currently very active in the Corvette community and with our local club, Classic Glass Corvette Club. August 2009 Update!!! Well, the 15th Anniversary Corvette Caravan is less than 1 week away and I know everyone is anxiously awaiting the day and packing and preparing for the trip. The Road Atlanta track is waiting for us to have fun and just about all of the other preparations have been made. For those of you who have paid for either Hot Laps or Parade Laps, you all have gotten this mass notification from me as to your time slot for your laps. We appreciate your patience as the response has been very good and the scheduling request (I want my laps with…) have been a minimum. By now you should have received your official Caravan Participant credentials from the National Corvette Museum. If you missed the deadline to register for the Caravan, you can do so either at the Road Atlanta track event or the morning of the launch. Your late registration fee is $10 per person and you will be given a paper card to put on the dash that can be traded in for a dash plaque and participant decal at the NCM (while supplies last). You will not receive a t-shirt as part of the late registration fee and we do not have any to sell. Once you reach the NCM you can check there for additional participant merchandise. The Driver’s Handbook will also be available as a .pdf file from the Georgia Caravan website with
this update. You can either print the manual out or, if you are coming either to the Road Atlanta track
event or leaving with us from Glade Road, you can get a hard copy manual; or both. Here is information on the events: Georgia / East Tennessee Caravan Schedule OverviewWednesday September 2, 2009 Georgia/East Tennessee Corvette Caravan Launch Event at Road Atlanta Track 08:00 – Gates Open Hooter’s of Kennesaw – Corvette Cruise-In 7:00-10:00 PM Hooter’s of Kennesaw has graciously offered our Caravan Participants a place to park with other Corvettes and have a leisurely dinner after a long day at the track. There will be VIP parking for anyone driving a Corvette, $5.99 Boneless Wings & French Fries platter, and any other specials they happen to be handing out either at the track or there. Thursday September 3, 2009 We will be meeting at the Glade Road exit on I-75 North, exit 278. Caravan Participants will line up in groups of 25-50 behind a Local Leader. Each group will leave approximately 10 minutes apart and travel North on I-75. Local Law Enforcement will be assisting us in exiting the parking lot, please obey their commands. 07:00 – 08:00 – Staging of Caravan Groups As we pass through Chattanooga, if you wish to meet up and join our Caravan, please call your Captain – Joe Owens at (678)427-8767 by the day of the event and coordinate the final plans. South Pittsburgh / Kimball (I-24 Exit 152) This will be our bathroom and gas stop of the Caravan. Please stay with your groups while traveling to this stop. We will be leaving as one group (if possible) to make our way through Nashville into Bowling Green. NOTICE: We observed a time change during this leg, please move your watches back one hour to coincide with CDT (Central Daylight or Corvette Driving Time). 09:00 – Arrive at South Pittsburgh / Kimball Nashville ~11:30 – Arrive in Nashville There will be no official stop in Nashville. However, as we reach the North end of Briley Parkway, we will be picking up participants as we travel through that area. If you wish to meet up and join our Caravan in Nashville, please call your Captain – Joe Owens at (678)427-8767 by the day of the event and coordinate the final plans. Bowling Green, Kentucky 12:30 – 1:00 PM – Arrive in Bowling Green, Kentucky The Georgia/East Tennessee and Florida Caravan group is one of four that will have a special Escort from the state line into Bowling Green. The escort vehicle is a specially equipped Corvette C6 Coupe complete with light bar, decals and strips of the Kentucky State Police. There will be a Kentucky State Trooper riding shotgun in the Corvette as well. Once we arrive in Bowling Green, we will enter the NCM parking lot through Gate "C" and follow the instructions of the parking attendants onsite. Parking will be at a premium this weekend, please be patient and follow all instructions given on where to park. We are looking forward to seeing all of you and for a FUN and SAFE trip! It is amazing how time flies when you are having fun planning for a Caravan! So far we have had a great response to the Road Atlanta Track Event and still have a few spots available. If you want a session for each driver (i.e. you and your spouse), we are also allowing that at this time. During the next couple of weeks we will be sending those who have already registered their confirmation of which timeslot they will be taking to the track. If you are interested in getting your car on Road Atlanta email me with your request and either send a check or use PayPal to pay for your spots. (see payment information below) If, and only if, there are spaces still available the day of the event you can pay for extra sessions at the track. A reminder that even though the hotels in the Bowling Green area are telling you that they are booked, keep checking the www.visitbgky.com/caravan website and check the "Up To Date Lodging" link for the latest on what is or isn’t available. There is a good chance that 45-60 days prior to the event rooms may come available. Keep checking back, as we get closer to the event I will be providing more updates! We are changing the pricing to $500 per slot from now until August 1st. With the changes in parking at the NCM, we are no longer able to offer the "touch-down" parking. For donation of $500.00 you will be up front in one of the first 25 spots in our Caravan behind our Grand Marshall, retired Corvette Plant Manager, Wil Cooksey. He will lead our Caravan followed by those 25 cars and the rest of our group to Bowling Green. You will also receive a special limited edition window decal and commemorative shirt. These spots are available to any of the Georgia/East Tennessee and Florida Caravan participants! If interested, please contact Joe Owens (678) 427-8767. UPDATE 01/20/09 !! After much wrangling, we have finally secured the track at Road Atlanta! Okay, Okay... So here are the details. We have the track at Road Atlanta on Wednesday September 2, 2009. The track is available to us for use from 9 AM to Noon and from 1 PM to 5 PM. The track will be closed from noon to 1 PM for a mandatory lunch break. We will have mandatory drivers meetings during the day and will be "Tech Inspecting" your cars before they are allowed on the track. There is a covered pavilion for you to get in out of the sun and watch the cars running the track. Road Atlanta has agreed to open their concessions so that food is available for purchase during the day and at lunch. There will be "Hot Laps" and Parade Laps available the day of the event. The "Hot Laps" will be Lead/Follow. That means that there will be a pacing car in the lead and a chase car at the end of the group. This is for your safety and enjoyment of the track. Helmets will be required for the "Hot Laps" and we will have some available at the track the day of the event. The pricing for the laps is as follows: "Hot Laps" - 5 laps for $75.00 (per car, per session) Parade Laps - 3 laps for $10.00 (per car, per session) We are limiting this to one "Hot Lap" session and/or one Parade Lap session per car. You can reserve your space now; there are limited spaces and once the spaces are full there will be no more. If additional spaces are available, you can purchase those the day of the event. After the track event, we will caravan from Braselton over to the Kennesaw area where you can check into your hotels for the night. (Exit 278) on I-75 North at 8:00 AM on Thursday September 3, 2009. We will be breaking into groups of ~50 cars. There will be a stop in the South Pittsburgh area ~9:30 AM for gas and bio breaks. We will attempt to leave from there as a single Caravan; we will be continuing to the National Corvette Museum with a scheduled arrival time of ~1PM Central (Corvette) Time. Our Grand Marshall Wil Cooksey and our Winner's Circle Participants will be leading the first group to leave Glade Rd. We will be picking up the Tennessee participants in Chattanooga, South Pittsburgh and Nashville as we make our way. Hotel Information The Georgia/East Tennessee Caravan has not been able to block any rooms for hotels in the Bowling Green area. The best information we can give you is to check the Bowling Green Visitors Bureau at www.visitbgky.com/caravan for a listing of all hotels, motels, Bed and Breakfast locations in the area. They will have phone numbers, addresses and specific information on those facilities. A good number of participants are starting to look to the Nashville area and will drive the short distance from Nashville to Bowling Green each day. We will need many helping hands to make this caravan as successful as the 1999 and the 2003 Caravans were.
