Illinois & Iowa

Hello, Fellow Corvette Fans!

Update - August 23. 2009

The Illinois-Iowa Driver's Handbook is now available for downloading here...
Download the Handbook (pdf)

I recommend that you print this out and have it with you so that you'll have route information, emergency aids, and general rules of the road.

The Caravan leaders will be communicating on CB and FRS radios. If you wish, bring yours along and you can join in the fun!

From my latest registration update, it looks like we have over 130 participants travelling in at least 75 Corvettes! The combined Caravan - Wisconsin, Minnesota, and the Dakotas will bring the total to well over 250 Corvettes (perhaps even closer to 300!).

We're getting close now! The Caravan will begin in just a matter of weeks!

Dralle Chevrolet Sponsoring Rally Point for Chicago Area Caravan Participants!

Dralle Chevrolet-Buick has volunteered to kick off the Caravan from their dealership in Peotone, IL! Caravan participants should plan to gather at the dealership starting at Noon on Tuesday, 1 September. The drive to Bloomington should take a little over two hours (Caravan speeds!), so departure from Dralle will be approximately 245 - 300 PM.

Please call Tom Hogan or Mike Pannozo to register (they need to know how much room to make for us on the lot).

Thanks for helping out, Tom!

The Chicago Caravan will be led by Rachelle Alexander. She has the route planned between Peotone and Bloomington. She'll be at the dealership around Noon on Tuesday, 1 Sep 09, to greet and organize the Caravan.

Rachelle has been a great help to me in planning this part of the Caravan!

Special Event for Iowa Participants!

If you're an Iowa Caravan participant, Karl Chevrolet www.karlchevrolet.com is offering a 2009 Corvette Caravan Kick-Off Breakfast on Tuesday morning (September 1, 2009)! Caravan members will enjoy a delicious pancake breakfast with all the trimmings! There is no charge for this event, but we are asking that you register with Jami Fontana at 515 299-4407 or by email at jamif@karlchevrolet.comt. Jami can also provide additional information with regard to local hotel accommodations if you plan to arrive the day before.

This event will begin at 7 AM and run through 9 AM, when the Iowa Caravan will depart on their way to meet up with the Illinois Caravan in Bloomington, IL late that afternoon.

Karl Chevrolet Inc is one of the nation's premier Corvette Dealerships. Another reason to kickoff the Caravan with Karl Chevrolet is to see the latest Karl Custom Corvettes ('67 Roadster and the '63 Split Window Coupe), which can be seen at the following site: http://www.karlchevrolet.com/site/karl_kustom_corvettes

Ankeny, IA 50021
(515) 299-4300

I'm recommending the following route between Ankeny and Bloomington:
Head south on US 69 to Interstate 80 eastbound
Follow I-80 eastbound to Exit 290 and take I-280 east (Quad Cities bypass)
Take the exit onto I-74 towards Peoria
Pass through Peoria towards Bloomington (stay on I-74)
Take the I-55/I-74 exit towards Indianapolis/St. Louis
Take the appropriate exit for your hotel

I'm recommending I-280 east because I was in the Quad Cities a while back, and I-80 is closed near the Iowa and Illinois border. Not knowing that little detail cost me an hour of backtracking!

Update: I've since discovered that at least one lane is open in each direction, so you can go either way now.

If you would like my cell phone number, please send me an email.

Northern Illinois Rally Point

If you live in Northern and/or Northwest Illinois, you can also drive to Bud Weiser Cadillac Chevrolet in Beloit, Wisconsin for your rally point. We'll be meeting up with the combined Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota Caravans. The current plan is to leave Bud Weiser around 2 PM for Bloomington.

Hotel Information for Bloomington
We'll be meeting up with the Wisconsin Caravan on Tuesday (September 1, 2009) late afternoon or evening. Reserve your room in Bloomington, IL so you don't miss out! The Bloomington Visitors Bureau reports that the Hawthorn Suites (309-829-8111), and Ramada Limited & Suites (309-828-0900) are full. The Holiday Inn Express West (309-820-9990) had eight rooms left on 20 February, so they will be gone soon. Rates are $92 for Double, King or King with wet bar. When you call, let them know you're with the 2009 Corvette Caravan (NCM09 reservation code).

We are working with the Bloomington-Normal Visitors Bureau (800 433-8226) to reserve another 100 or so rooms at other hotels at this interchange, and will post that information as soon as it is available.

We will depart from Bloomington on Wednesday (September 2, 2009), at 8 AM.

The combined Caravan will drive to Marion, IL, and stop for lunch and gas at Illinois Centre Mall. There will be time to rest, relax, and/or shop as well. The combined Caravans will depart Marion between 1:30 - 2:00 PM and travel on to Bowling Green, KY, arriving between 5 - 6 PM Wednesday.

Information about the Mall and Marion can be found here...

Travelling Through Kentucky

From Marion, we'll drive down Interstate 57 to Interstate 24, then on to Paducah. We'll continue on I-24 until we reach the Western Kentucky Parkway. We'll follow that for some 40+ miles, then head toward Bowling Green on the William H. Natchez Parkway.

The National Corvette Museum will be conducting a special arrival ceremony at the Museum that afternoon.

The NCM has also posted information about the Labor Day weekend agenda at the following:

Hotel Information for Bowling Green

There are lots of questions about hotels in Bowling Green. Unfortunately, I have been unable to obtain any discount codes or reserve rooms in Bowling Green.

The best source of up to date information can be found at the Bowling Green Visitor's Center web site.

Thanks for joining the Caravan, and I'm looking forward to a great trip to Bowling Green!
