Our CaravanMaybe you are new to the Corvette world, or maybe you do not know of the 2019 Caravan, so what is the 2019 Caravan? It is a gathering of Corvette enthusiasts from around the United States, Canada and several other countries. We form caravans of Corvettes from locations around the Country to make a great road trip to Bowling Green, Kentucky. This will be an event beginning in late August which will celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the National Corvette Museum on Labor Day weekend 2019. Caravans will form from locations close to your home for this event so you can participate with thousands of other Corvette owners. Participants can join at various locations along the way.

We are excited that you are visiting the Arizona and New Mexico National Corvette Museum web page.

Captain Holt Davis
Captain Holt Davis

We have planned an exciting and memorable Caravan to the National Corvette Museum 25th Anniversary Celebration. We will caravan along scenic sections of Arizona and New Mexico highways. What could be better than traveling along the beautiful mountain roads in your Corvette?

Changes for this revision
1. The daily routes and events.  2. AZ-NM Caravan Polo shirts.

Our Route
We will Begin in Phoenix with a morning departure on Friday, August 23rd from the Mesa Bass Pro Shop. Our route will be different from previous AZ-NM Caravans with a southerly route rather than the common drive along I-40. We will have more scenic drives and different events. We will join with the South Texas and Arkansas Caravans for our final caravan into Bowling Green. Imagine the sight of hundreds of Corvettes in these combined Caravans traveling to the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green!

Arizona and New Mexico Route

Caravan Route, Schedule and Hotels?
I have driven our caravan route to Bowling Green. What a great scenic trip! I believe that all participants will find our “Southern” Caravan to be fun and interesting…We will enjoy a lot of scenic roads instead of just the Interstate highways. Please bring your FRS or GMRS radios for communication during our caravan.

  • Thursday – August 22: Suggested hotel for participants who need to overnight in Phoenix is the Hyatt Place located in Mesa at 1422 West Bass Pro Drive. Mesa, Arizona. Additional hotels are in the immediate area. I recommend considering the Friday morning traffic in Phoenix due to our scheduled 8 AM departure. Many Phoenix participants are renting rooms near the Mesa Bass Pro Shop. We will meet at 7:30 AM for a drivers’ meeting before departing the Bass Pro Shops parking lot.
  • Friday – August 23: Meet and Greet Phoenix and Tucson participants in Phoenix, AZ. We will depart at 8 AM Friday morning from the Bass Pro parking lot in Phoenix/ Mesa. We will caravan along US-60 to Show Low, AZ for lunch and fuel. We will travel through the Very Large Array radio telescope on our way to Socorro, NM. Our evening hotel is the Crowne Plaza in Albuquerque. This hotel has multiple restaurants including their fine Ranchers Club of New Mexico, Stone Street and Cantina Lounge. Breakfast is included Saturday morning before we depart from their parking lot.
  • Saturday – August 24: I will lead our Caravan departing Albuquerque along I-25 south to San Antonio, NM where we will turn  east on US-380.  Our drive will pass the volcanic Valley of Fire and some beautiful mountain roads to Cattle Barron in Ruidoso, NM for lunch.. Following lunch we will travel on US-70 and NM-244 to Cloudcroft, NM for a little shopping for Indian souvenirs, jewelry or a cold drink at the Western Bar & Cafe.  Continuing from Cloudcroft we will travel to the Hampton Inn  & Suites in Artesia, NM.  An evening dinner is planned at the Adobe Rose  Restaurant. A buffet style breakfast is included at the hotel.
  • Sunday – August 25: We will depart from the host hotel east along US-82 driving by the 100,000 barrel per day Navajo Refinery and through a portion of the  Permian Basin oil field to Hobbs, NM for a light lunch provided by Permian Chevrolet Buick GMC and Cadillac. We will then travel to Midland TX and tour the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum. The museum will provide a group rate. There are many interesting exhibits as well as a collection of Jim Hall’s Chaparral race cars. The Chaparral cars won world championships with a lot of help from Zora Duntov and Chevrolet. Our plan is to continue through the largest Texas wind farm to the Hilton Garden Inn in Abilene, TX for the evening. There are many fine restaurants near the hotel.
  • Monday – August 26: We will have a leisurely drive to the Marriott Hotel and Golf Club at Champions Circle across from Texas Motor Speedway. Dinner is available at the hotel or in nearby Roanoke, TX. Our afternoon plans include meeting a portion of the South Texas Caravan and an optional drive along pit road and winner’s circle at the TMS. A two and half lap ride in the track “van” is included, a fee is required for the pit road and winner’s circle drive and the track “van”.
  • Tuesday – August 27: We will depart from TMS after a meet and greet with the Lone Star Corvette Club and South Texas participants with a parade lap of TMS. We will plan a lunch and fuel stop in New Boston, TX. Afterward we will continue to Little Rock, AR for the evening meet and greet event with the Arkansas Caravan and additional participants from the South Texas Caravan at Bale Chevrolet. Our Evening host hotel is the Embassy Suites near Bale Chevrolet. A cooked to order breakfast is included.
  • Wednesday – August 28: We will depart from the Embassy Suites to Bale Chevrolet where we will join the Arkansas Caravan. We will have a police escort from Bale along I-630 for our final caravan to Bowling Green. We will plan a lunch and fuel stop Wolfchase, TN which is an east suburb of Memphis. After lunch we will continue to Bowling Green. We do not have any blocked hotel rooms; however, the NCM is assisting finding rooms in BG. There are many new hotels which have opened so rooms will become available as over blocked rooms are released. Additional rooms are available in surrounding towns. The NCM is providing assistance finding a room in Bowling Green.

We will not use a travel agency to reserve rooms for the 2019 AZ/ NM Caravan registered participants. Contact Captain Holt Davis at for additional hotel information. The host hotels will provide discounts and security. I have established AZ-NM Caravan registrations for these hotels. Email Captain Holt Davis for reservation requirements for the host hotels and discounted rates.

Rigid Schedule?
We are planning for your enjoyment and have completed several trial runs along this route. We encourage you to research sites along the way. Plan scenic stops that you, your friends, or your club like. You do not need to run $quot;nose to tail” since we have relaxed schedules with plenty of Caravan reform locations along the way.

Who is in charge?

Captain Holt Davis is the Arizona & New Mexico Captain for the 2019 Caravan. I live in Southeastern New Mexico and I am a member of the Lone Star Corvette Club located in Dallas – Ft. Worth, TX. I retired after working as an automation engineer, PLC programmer and SCADA administrator in the petroleum industry. I am an Air Force Vietnam veteran…spent the time at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas…it was tough but someone needed to do it. I participated in the 2003 50th Anniversary Corvette Caravan and the 2009 15th Anniversary Caravan. I was captain for the 2014 20th AZ-NM Caravan. I fell in love with the ’63 Corvette Stingray fastback the first time I saw one and dreamed of owning one. Well that did not happen but I have owned 14 Corvettes through the years including my current ’67 Roadster. My ’71 was displayed on the turntable at the front of the NCM. Additional caravan information is available at the Arizona and New Mexico 2019 Caravan to National Corvette Museum Facebook page.

Co-Captain Curtis Simpson is the Arizona & New Mexico Co-Captain from Phoenix AZ. I acquired my first Corvette, a 1965 Red Convertible with hardtop, 396 CI, 425 HP in 1970. Drove it for 2 years, engine went bad, changed out to a 327, dumb move. I spent 7 years rebuilding her only to have her stolen in Panama City FL the day before I graduated flight school in the US Army in 1980. One of the saddest days of my life. I went 28 years wanting another one, not enough money, life challenges. I retired as Assistant Chief (C2) of the Peoria Illinois Fire Department in January 2008 at 2:30 PM and ordered my new 2008 Crystal Red Metallic Coupe at 4:30 PM, Hoorah Hoorah she was delivered in May at the Museum. I drove her to the 15th Caravan along with my friends from the Corvette Club in Washington Illinois. I then moved to Surprise AZ, and joined the Sun Country Corvette Club in 2011, was elected Vice President in 2013 and President in 2015. Our Club has gone from about 80 members to over 150 in the last 3 years. Great people with great cars. I was scheduled to go on the 20th Caravan, but that was canceled by a family medical emergency. In December of 2016 my wife gave me an ultimatum, she gets her new Ford F150 Platinum and I get my new Corvette…Duh! Got my new 2017 GS Coupe for Christmas. I’ve always loved sports cars. In my professional life I was a Policeman, Fireman, and a retired Army Officer/Helicopter Pilot.

Anybody that would like to volunteer for the Caravan/25 Anniversary we are ready to start taking names. If you have a special location or time you would like to work let me know in your email. These are 4 hour sessions.

We were short in parking on volunteers covering all the Gates. I think it would be great fun working a Gate when one of the caravans came in with all of the different types/color corvettes. One thing about every gate is that it has a tent and at least two chairs and Larry is always checking on you and he has cold water.

There will be some new areas for volunteer needs and one of the jobs will be the coolest at the NCM.

Be sure to check your event schedule before volunteering so you want miss your fun job volunteering.

Corvette Tool Box

I am very pleased to announce that I have arraigned for us to purchase very nice shirts for our caravan at a discounted price. These shirts are a high quality polo pique shirt with our logo embroidered on the shirt. These are not the common T-shirt with a silk-screen print. These are shirts you can proudly wear long after our caravan to remember the great time we will have. I feel that each of us should purchase a shirt so we can stand out as the best dressed caravan at the NCM. I will purchase two for me so I will have an AZ-NM Caravan shirt for each day at the museum.

In order to keep the price as low as possible, I request that each of you order your shirt directly from the AZ-NM Caravan, c/o Holt Davis. PO Box 1564, Artesia, NM 88211-1564. These shirts will be shipped directly to me to reduce the cost. I plan to present your shirt to you when I provide your NCM 25th Anniversary credentials and route book. I will ship the shirts to you if you desire for an additional shipping fee. I have received one shirt with a generic logo to verify the high quality. That shirt without our great discount, cost $38. including shipping. The great news is that our group order and discount will reduce this cost to only $24. each…lower than many basic T-shirts. The shirts are available in both men’s and women’s styles in sizes XS through 2XL for $24. and 3XL through 4XL for $27. The shirts are available up to 6XL for $30. This is a 37% discount when ordered as a group.

I request that you order your shirt soon so that I can place the group order and receive the discounted price. You should specify men or women style as well as the desired size and desired color. Please send your check to cover the cost to “AZ-NM 2019 Caravan” account at Arizona – New Mexico Caravan, c/o Holt Davis, PO Box 1564, Artesia, NM 88211-1564.
